TEAMWORK - PART 2
A dominating participant in a team is someone who
tends to assert their ideas, opinions, and decisions over others. They can be
highly assertive and may come across as aggressive or intimidating to their
teammates. While their strong personality can sometimes lead to successful outcomes,
it can also lead to resentment and conflict within the team. The dominating
participant may not allow for other team members to have their voices heard,
which can stifle creativity and limit the team's potential. It's important for
team leaders to address dominating behaviour and encourage open communication
and collaboration within the team. By promoting a culture of mutual respect and
inclusivity, team members can work together more effectively and achieve their
goals with greater success.
Positives of Dominating Participants
He is dominating as he is having good knowledge on various topics, his own work, culture, politics and about the whole world. He is a very good communicator and a very positive person. At times he tries to topple his boss during discussion. Boss sometime feels bad about this, but if he understands that he is not doing any mischief rather trying to resolve problem and not at all hurting him in any case.
Boss will be able to handle him once he understands that this dominating person in my team is better than me in intelligence and knowledge, one who can provide me solutions in no time, what else I want. The day Boss understands this particular fact, he starts to manage his dominating participant quite well.
Dealing with Dominating Participants
- Keep discussions focused on goals and objectives
If you talk about something else, he will start talking about that because he knows about particular topic a lot, so you have to avoid general topics / issues except your objectives of the day.
Let us suppose there is some snag in the aircraft standing near tarmac.
What Boss or Group Leader does it now.
- Try to have a balanced participation, if not then form two groups, suppose you have 3
participants including one dominating participant.
First group you have only one person that is dominating one and second group has remaining two participants.
If Group leader or Boss wants to do the job correctly and as well as keep the ego of the dominating participant in control, he should do the following:
Boss will divide the job in two steps or two parts, will brief his dominating participant about the job and ask him to leave for conducting step 1 near the Tarmac (where aircraft stands or rest)
STEP 1:
Will be done by dominating participant. Normally start of the job is little cumbersome, as you need to find where to start from, where to open from and how to go about it in the very first instance while keeping all safety norms in mind, definitely one has to think a lot initially so as to do the job more correctly and judiciously. Dominating man follows all norms, takes his time, finishes his job in 30 - 45 minutes. By the time dominating person finishes his job, Boss arrives with his Second Group where you have two participants to conduct step 2 .
STEP 2 :
Boss tells second Group to initiate the step 2 and, in the meantime, takes briefing from First Group i.e the dominating person about the job he has carried just now and then tells him to go to rest room and relax.
Second Group starts their job, they do the needful, after finishing the job, close all panels then go to Cockpit, test the particular system. Test is found ok. This implies that job done by second group as well as First group is correct. Testing reveals that job done by first group (Dominating Participant) is also correct.
- Do give dominating participant a due respect. No doubt, he is very useful, full of information, intelligent, very positive in his acts and of course loyal to the company. Then, why drop such person from the Team despite his huge contribution in resolving the critical problems and issues.
At times it happens that we drop such person from the group and face problems later. It takes seconds to drop or transfer him somewhere else but later find it difficult to bring in another person of such skills.
So be aware of such skillful participants who can turn the table with their skills anytime.
Reluctant Participants
A reluctant participant in a team is someone who is hesitant or unwilling to engage fully in the team's activities. They may lack confidence in their abilities, feel uncomfortable in group settings, or simply be uninterested in the project or task at hand. Reluctant participants can be frustrating for team leaders and other team members, as their lack of participation can slow down progress and limit the team's potential. However, it's important to approach them with empathy and understand that everyone has different strengths and weaknesses. It's also possible that the reluctant participant may have valuable ideas and insights to contribute, but they may need extra support or encouragement to feel comfortable sharing them. Team leaders should strive to create a safe and inclusive environment where all team members feel valued and supported. This can involve providing additional training or resources, pairing the reluctant participant with a mentor or supportive teammate, or finding alternative ways for them to contribute to the team's goals. With the right approach, even the most reluctant participant can become an engaged and valuable member of the team.
Reluctant Participant is
-Shy
-Non-Vocal
- Keeps to himself /herself
But some may come out to be super intelligent provided you give them space or time to talk on the problem you are going through. That is going to be big revelation.
They may stammer while talking, even with great difficulty when they try to speak something, dominating participant intervenes and takes over the whole conversation. And then reluctant participant takes back and sits quietly. So we don't give chance to reluctant participant to talk and in turn we miss out with some good idea that they would have given you to resolve some critical fault or problem in your work area.
Reluctant participant is such a person who will answer your query only if you ask him/her otherwise they will just keep quiet, remain within their world, come to office follow orders, do the needful and go home, will never use their mind unless tapped.
They are basically director's actor. What director will say they will follow and will never share their thoughts with director? unless asked.
Dealing with Reluctant participant
We should give such participants some space and time to talk. when he or she talks others should remain silent enabling all of us to listen to some good idea which may help us resolve some big issue, you never know. Furthermore
Try asking for input, use open ended questions.
Actively listen to the person when they talk.
Help them feel a part of the team.
Even at home we can find super intelligent people that may be your son, daughter, wife and other dear ones.
When son talks about some idea, his elder brother being dominating type topples him and starts talking himself on the particular issue and whole idea of getting to know the skill of that younger boy is lost. In that case Father must ensure that young boy is not interrupted while he is throwing his idea to resolve some critical issue in the family. After hearing his idea father and other family member come to know that how brilliant this boy is. Why, till date he is not tapped. why we have not allowed him to speak on many other family matters earlier.
So give him/her time to talk. when he/ she talks Elder or Senior must ensure that no one interrupts him or her while he/she is sharing his/her ideas.
Whenever you go to market to buy something for your home. Please do take along either whole family or some family member to get the right choice. If no one is able to join you, connect them on video call whichever market or Mall you are in and take their viewpoint. Then you have no arguments in the house later on that item as you involved everyone equally on that. That is called Teamwork. And the atmosphere in the house remains happy and pleasant.
Thanks ...we will talk about other above-mentioned participants in my next blog hopefully.
Take care...Bye Bye
